What's Happening Update October 2002 Jeff Noon Hello The new
novel, Falling Out of Cars, is out on the 7th November. I'll be doing
just two readings this time: The first draft of the Vurt screenplay is now complete. Various meetings have taken place, and I'm now waiting for people to send me detailed notes before I start the second draft. This process will begin with myself and the director, Iain Softley, getting together to work out just what happens in each scene. This will be done in some detail. There's a lot of raw material in the first draft, which now has to be honed down, brought into some kind of structure. A very personal project, and one I've been thinking about a number of for years now, is finally ready for take off. This is The Modernists, a new play to be produced in Sheffield in 2003. It's about a group of young men from North London who, in the late 1950s, started to dress and act in a certain manner. By the early 60s, their way of life had become just another fashion, a commercial exercise, but the Modernists (as they called themselves) were the first, the originators. Later, the name would be shortened to the Mods. The plays follows the lives of four of these young men, as they watch their great invention becoming commonplace. I have really explored the possibilities of dramatic language in the play, giving the Modernists a whole new way of talking. It's a piece that more or less wrote itself, straight from the heart, and very much a return to the kind of work I was doing before Vurt and the whole novel-writing thing took off. The play runs from June 11th to June 21st, 2003, at the Sheffield Crucible Theatre. Box office, 0114 249 6000. Steve Beard and I are currently working on some more mappalujo pieces, with a view to gathering all the material into a book one day. This may take some time because we're both busy on other projects, and just making a living and all that. But I think it's very important that I keep these more experimental projects going; they're a major part of what I'm about. More than anything else, they keep me sane. Brian Eno is creating a piece of music based on a text from Cobralingus. I received a postcard from him recently, telling me that progress is being made on the track. These things take time. All for
